How do Loona menstrual panties work?

You’re probably wondering how all this works, how long they last, how to wash them…

The panties are made of four layers that together provide comfort, security, and hygiene.

It was important for us that only quality materials come into contact with the skin.

First layer: Made of cotton, bamboo fabric, or, for heavy flow models, PFAS-free polyamide, which absorbs and dries extremely quickly. This layer's role is to quickly wick fluid to the super absorbent layer, so the surface that touches the body remains as dry and comfortable as possible.

No unpleasant odors, no plastic against the skin, no foreign body in the organism!

Second layer: A special absorbent layer retains menstrual blood in its structure, distributes it over the surface, and reduces the risk of leakage, while remaining thin and discreet.

Third layer is impenetrable and guarantees no leaks! We promise! The waterproof layer made of nylon with elastane creates a secure barrier against leaks, so blood does not pass through to clothing, and it is flexible and does not rustle. Our waterproof layer is made of PUL (polyurethane-laminated material) – a thin, flexible membrane that does not allow liquid to pass through but allows the fabric to breathe. This means that menstrual blood cannot leak onto clothing, while the skin remains in a more pleasant, less stuffy environment than with classic PVC or rubber foil.

Fourth, outer layer: The soft and elastic outer layer is pleasant on the skin, adapts nicely to the body, and allows the skin to breathe, thus reducing moisture retention and the feeling of stuffiness during the day.

How to wash Loona menstrual underwear?

Before you use them (yes, even before the first use!):

Wash your Loona menstrual panties at 30°C with detergent, without fabric softener. You can also hand wash them!

This is necessary to relax the absorbent fibers, which will allow for maximum absorbency. Otherwise, they will not be waterproof.

Can I wash my Loona menstrual panties with bar soap?

It is recommended not to wash them with bar soap as it will clog the absorbent fibers and make them less effective.

Why should I avoid fabric softener?

Fabric softener can damage the seams of Loona menstrual panties and make them less absorbent in the long run. If it happens once, it's not terrible at all, but it should be avoided over a longer period.

And what after washing?

After wearing them: Rinse your Loona menstrual panties with cold water until the water runs clear.

Then put them in a mesh laundry bag, wash them with the rest of your laundry, and let them dry. You can hand wash them if you prefer.

Let them air dry. Once they're dry, they're ready to use!

You can also dry them on a radiator that is not too hot, over a folded towel.

You can also put them in the washing machine, on a spin cycle with a dry towel so that it absorbs as much excess water as possible.

Why should I wash them with cold water? High heat affects stains that can remain on the fabric of the panties. Heat causes blood to coagulate, which is why cold water should be used.

Why should I avoid the dryer and iron? Heat could, over time, reduce the waterproofness of menstrual panties.

Is it hygienic to wash them at a low temperature?

Our panties are designed for multiple uses and are hygienically safe when properly maintained. We recommend rinsing them in cold water after use, then washing them in the machine at 30°C with detergent.

The combination of rinsing, mechanical washing in the machine, and the action of detergent removes menstrual blood, odors, and most microorganisms from the fibers, so the underwear is hygienically clean for the next wear.

This way, bacteria and impurities are reduced to a level that is safe for daily use in healthy individuals. Proper washing and complete air drying prevent moisture retention and the development of unpleasant odors. Modern detergents are designed to work effectively at temperatures as low as 30–40°C, so high temperatures are not needed for underwear to be well washed.
